| It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of our brother firefighter, Don Walker, on 4-8-26. Don was a life member and very active until his health no longer permitted him to answer calls. He had 22 years of service mostly helping with the fire police and events. And we are so fortunate that Don always had a camera with him and the thousands of pictures he took of calls and events over the years. Don and his wife Sandy have been very generous in their support of NBFD. Don will be missed around Station 8 for sure.
Don also was active with Shermans Dale Fire Company and a long time member with Danville Fire Company where he started his fire service.
Below is Don's story from his member in the spotlight interview back in 2024.
November 23, 2024 Don Walker joined the Danville Fire Company in 1956 at the age of 18, where he was a firefighter, and later became a driver.
Don and his wife, Sandy, moved to Perry County in 2002 and joined Sherman's Dale Community Fire Co in 2004
What year did you join NBFD?: "2004"
Did you hold any fire or administration positions?: Fire company photographer, fire police, bingo team and help with fundraising events
What is the most memorable emergency that you responded to?: A large building fire in Danville where clothing was made.
Why did you join the Fire Company?: "My father, grandfather and uncles were all members."
What is the biggest change you have seen?: "The price of apparatus and equipment, plus the amount of required training you have to have in today's fire service."
Don is usually on the other side of the camera, so he is not in a lot of pictures. Luckily, we have some of him.
Don is a life member with NBFD. His photography has given us so many pictures of calls, fundraising events and firehouse life. We are fortunate to have these memories.
Don and Sandy have been very generous contributors toward NBFD for many years, and you'll see their names on our new kitchenette and kitchen table.
Thanks Flash, for everything you and Sandy have done and continue to do. |
